Research and Development

R&D – Microbial Diagnostics
OTC BioTech has been conducting R&D activities in microbial diagnostics to develop different platforms using handheld devices and prototype assays. Our diagnostic assay portfolio will expand by matching aptamer sequence(s) to the selected target(s). This development process creates aptamers with high affinity binding activity that results in ultra-sensitive target detection when used in an assay.
Antimicrobial
Another area of R&D is development of nuclease-resistant DNA aptamers that bind to target bacteria, virus, parasite or toxin surface components, much like “artificial or synthetic antibodies and kill target cells.”

Aptamers

OTCBiotech technology focuses on developing selected DNA aptamer sequences and DNA aptamer-conjugates for diagnostics and therapeutics.

Aptamers are DNA or RNA “synthetic oligonucleotides*” that exhibit desired characteristic features such as a greater affinity and selectivity in binding specific targets and when conjugated to functional proteins and other molecules result in molecular structures that are valuable tools for diagnostics and therapeutics. The selected sequences can form specific “binding pockets” for their cognate ligands (ligands bind to a site on a target). Aptamers are similar in function to antibodies, but are easier to make.

*An oligonucleotide (from Greek prefix oligo-, "having few, having little") is a short nucleic acid polymer. Although they can be formed by bond cleavage of longer segments, they are now more commonly synthesized, in a sequence-specific manner, from individual nucleotides.
